When you arrive a the car rentals desk, one thing that the agents will most likely advise is to take car rental insurance as well. You hem and haw, and can't be sure whether you existing insurance policies will cover accidents that may happen with you driving a rental car. Is car rental insurance worth the extra $$$?

Well, in many cases personal insurance may be enough. However, you need to check your policies to be sure, and verify everything before you proceed to the car rental counter.

In certain cases, however, personal policies will not cover accidents that occur during business travels, so if it's a work-related travel, check with your employer if the company's insurance policy will cover car rentals. If you own a car and have insurance, check if your policy covers rental insurance. Consider also that if you have an older car, your insurance policy coverage might not be enough to pay for damages to a brand new SUV.

Things to Consider When Renting a Car

Things to Consider When Renting a Car

When renting a car, there's more to consider than just the make of the car and rental cost per day. Find a rental company that offers convenient pick up and drop off points. If you will be arriving at your destination by air or rail, find out if you can pick up the car on your way out of the airport or train station and drop it at a convenient location at your next destination. Otherwise, it can be a logistic nightmare just getting and delivering the car especially if you're not familiar with the place.

You also need to find out what is included in the fees you are paying. In most cases, the car is given to you fully tanked with gas, and you need to return it similarly. But what about car rental insurance? Does it make sense to get one? What does the insurance cover? Most cars are equipped with GPS navigators nowadays, but ask just the same. If you need child seats, are these offered for free, or at an additional charge?

In most cases, all these information are available online. It is better to review your options and plan your booking ahead of time so that you have time to compare the offers available, rather than making the arrangements at the car rentals desk at the last minute.
