Avoiding the Pitfalls of Car Hire

Whether heading to the beach, the mountains, a glittering metropolis, or a pastoral setting for some peace and quiet, holidaymakers in the UK have one thing in common – they need a way to get around. In order to explore Cornwall or the Lake District, an auto serves the need best.
In fact, hiring or renting a car is the most popular transportation option for people on holiday. However, travellers beware – renting a car can be fraught with fine print, hidden charges and unexpected difficulties.
It's well known that for great nightlife, cultural offerings and English courses London is the perfect choice, but occasionally even Londoners need to get away. How can you escape successfully? To avoid the pitfalls of car rental, do your homework, ask questions and pay attention.
Pitfall #1: Rental Insurance
If you own a car, check with your personal insurance company – rental car coverage is often included. Otherwise, take time at the rental car counter to make sure you fully understand what the rental insurance covers. Even the rental car top-up insurance offered by most European firms often excludes tyres, windows and under-body damage. Ask specific questions ("If the car is stolen, what will I pay?") and have the agent explain every aspect of coverage before signing. And of course, always read the rental car insurance fine print.
Pitfall #2: Other People's Damage
Before driving away, accompany the agent on a thorough vehicle inspection and have them make a note of even the slightest existing damage. Ask them to sign (not initial) the list of damages and be sure to keep a copy.
Pitfall #3: Taxes and Other Fees
Unfair though it may seem, it's up to the customer to ask questions and find out exactly what the total cost will be. Is mileage unlimited? Are there any concession fees (usually only for firms at an airport)? Will a drop charge be applicable if the car is returned somewhere other than the pick-up location? These are all things to keep in mind.
Pitfall #4: Age
Age may be just a number, but it's an important one to consider when renting a car. Drivers under the age of 25 may rent a car, but only with an added fee of up to £16 a day. Additionally, drivers aged 70 and over should check with the agency for any additional fees.

Pitfall #5: Late Booking
Most car-hire companies will allow reservations without a credit card, so there's no reason to wait until the last minute to book a car. Book too late and you run the risk of paying much higher rates, particularly during a popular travel time.
It's certainly true that for an English school London is the optimal choice, but there's much to be seen and done elsewhere in the UK. On your next holiday, why not rent a car and explore the wilds of Scotland, historical Bath or the picturesque Cornish coast?
